Chapter 10: Point of no Return

Marcia woke up slowly, and her head was spinning. As she looked around the cabin of Veronica's ship she took everything in. The dark sky above them with stars, points of light to guide their way. X sat to her left, seperating Isaac from her. She liked that. Marcia didn't really trust anyone except for X and the people he knew. These people were strange, they had the same strong look like X...but a little less harsh. Isaac was one, he looked...innocent, like he only had good intentions. She saw Jackal, he was unconscious in the seat infront of her. His hair was silver and he was...dark-natured. He had used claws like X did when he was.....angry. They seemed to be polar opposites. Jackal with his silver hair and evil smirk, and Isaac with his golden hair and positive personality. X was silent. X looked as if he could have been their father, their mediator, a mix of their power and others. She tried to go back to sleep.

"Where is it exactly?" Veronica asked the next morning as they flew towards the rocky cliffs, beginning to reach Rockland Gulch. It was a desolate place, The cliffs created a natural maze for people on the ground. They flew over the cliffs, hundreds of dusty caverns and monoliths seperating the world from the space inside. There was only dust, no life or green in any direction. "Just keep going..." X's voice was as quiet as he could make it, but Marcia still woke up. "I don't see how we can find-" Isaac started but X cut him off, "You can't find something that's lost.... You have to stumble upon it..." They flew for another twenty minutes before they found it. Nestled in the cliffs, in a large dust basin, was a large metallic structure. It was some sort of building. X looked at it, "Here we are......my lab."

                    -----

Allen sat in his bubble of machinery, the power coursing through wires and monitors. It was his equalibrium. He monitored everything he could with his drone-army. The police drones did their usual tasks but were all under his command. The public only thought that there was a small malfunction and that it was fixed. They didn't know that the whole police system was in his grasp. If he needed them to converge somwhere, they would. "...like a swarm of locusts they are...such cute little monsters..." he chuckled to himself. His perception was un-imaginable from where he sat. All his bugs, all monitors, all drone visors, all public building security cameras...his to watch simultaneously. Cornelius had told him a great deal of what X could do...it was astounding...the sheer strength and intelect of only a small sample of his powers in others...could create something...inhuman. "No", thought Allen to himself, "better than human......MORE human.." Cornelius was going to get what he wanted, raging revenge. Allen sent a few "servants" to escort him into a small research lab of Sinclair Systems. He would give Cornelius a new body...not a body as convincing as his, but a dangerous body nonetheless...Cornelius was going to become a very valuable pawn. Allen remembered the small black crystal that had been embedded in Cornelius's arm. What was it?...what could it-......do?

                    -----

They landed in the small open area, blowing dust up into the air. The Phoenix settled into the dust as the hatch opened. They streched their legs as they got out, "What do you mean: Lab?" asked Isaac as he looked at the grey dome, jutting its way out of the cliff wall and the basin floor. X didn't speak. they all wanted to ask him but they were too afraid. Finally Veronica asked aloud, "What...what is all of this? Who are you? Why are we here? Is Jackal okay?" They turned to her and then back to X. He was looking sternly into the blank wall of the dome, it's surface was barely scuffed. "Well?" asked Isaac. X turned to Isaac as his blood ran cold, "You want to know why we're here? I'll tell you!" X's voice got louder even though he wasn't shouting. They backed away from him as his voice boomed, "The reason you're all together is because I decided to make a multi-million-dollar corporation twenty years ago and the fool I hired to stand as head chairman realized he could over throw me, and did. When he did they had me arrested and I played "normal" and let them take me so this wouldn't happen. Little did I know that the fool in charge just so happened to be greedy enough to want my power when he noticed hints of it. If it weren't for that I'd never let the police sample my DNA like they do all convicts. Now the damn fool is making horrid creations just like you." he poined to Isaac, Marcia, and Jackal, still in the cockpit. They shuddered as his voice echoed. "And he's the first one..." X's finger still remained, pointing at Jackal, who was now awake.

"RRAAAAAAAHHH!" His arms flailed through rock as he jumped out of The Phoenix. Jackal was free, in a way. He ripped through the rock and dust with his claws, now covering his arms up to the shoulders. "What's wrong with him?!?!" Veronica shreiked as he roared into the morning sky. X watched closely as Jackal was raging, no longer at X, but simply at his predicament. "He's unable to slash this problem away, and his strength is growing....negatively." They all jumped at his last word. X walked over to him, "...calm down...you may hurt someone.." Jackal was too angry, "Who was it? Give me a name!..." X stopped, "His name is Cornelius. He wanted to change you all." Jackal roared with more anger, "I'll KILL HIM!" X was getting annoyed, "Calm down...learn to control yourself.." Jackal was still angry, "He took my life, my memories, thanks to him I'm a freak...a monster just like-" X was mad for a moment, "....ENOUGH!" His voice echoed and caused small crackes to pop off all the surrounding rocks. The rest of them stood back. Jackal was still steaming, his one eye still black with dark energy, "...Just like you-" X quickly grabbed Jackal by the face and slammed him into the ground, sending up all the dust and cracking the bedrock. The rippled ground spat up chuncks in every direction. Jackal was out again....for now. "I'm not wasting my time babysitting a spoiled child." The rest of them stood back in astonishment. Veronica was devistated as she rushed over to the small crater, "Jackal-!..." she half cried. X's voice was softening as he walked away, "He's fine...."

                   -----

The lights in the room were dim and ominous, and it smelled metallic. The table was awkward to get up from...and very complicated. His feet touched the floor, the small clink was unnerving to his ears. A shudder ran through him as he lifted his hands to his eyes, looking at the metal molded into a human's shape. "Good God..." uttered Cornelius as he shifted his stance, wondering if he'd dented the floor. One of the drones walked into his "chamber" a few seconds after. "Master requests your presence, sir." The drone was eyeing Cornelius strangely, "Go ahead...hit it...it won't fight back." hissed a voice over an intercom. Cornelius swiftly punched a clean hole through the drone's head. It toppled to the floor as Cornelius grinned, "Excellent..."

                    -----

X took the cube from Marcia, it's surface slick and oily black. He walked around the dome wall. There was a small place with five holes on what looked to be a panel attached to the dome itself. They were confused as they watched him put his fingers into the holes and pull. It turned out to be a solid brick of metal that fell to the ground after he let go. Behind it was a small square shaped socket with circuitry leads. X stuck the butt of the cube into it and the ground began to shake. The dome split into wide sections, sliding over eachother. Behind it was a large stairwell. "What is this place?" asked Marcia. X stared down into the unlit darkness below the stairs, "It's my creation. All that I have left of it..."

                    -----

Allen Sinclair was an awkward child, not feeling much anger nor happiness towards anything in particular. He would often times sit in his room doing nothing, thinking in a way that no one else could interpret. His parents were worried for him, wondering if he'd grow up and become more social, more...average. His father owned the company from the time he was born, and well untill Allen was twenty-three years old. As a young boy Allen had no interest in anything except for creating. He didn't doodle normal sketches, paint with his fingers, or play with building blocks...he drew designs for things. He wanted to know physics and science fom the time he was eight, and began designing the things his dad's company was just formulating. He was an avid inventor, fascinated by his own work and no one elses. As he became a teenager he found another interest on the side of his inventions...X. The thing that fascinated Allen was the fact that X was scientificly impossible when it came to the stories about him, and he had to be real in some sense, from the fact that everyone knew about him. The few who had claimed to have seen him all had the same relative description too. The odds that X wasn't real were suprisingly steep compared to all who had seen and known of him. Allen wanted to prove that X was real, prove that he could be met...or even controlled. The first Sinclair Systems Mechs were large and bulky, they were used to fuel mankind's one main desire...war. The first Mechs were roughly ten to fifteen feet square, with large bulky arms and legs. Their weapons were awkwardly placed and they tended to fall over into eachother, but they were still deadly killing machines. The few ground troops in the wars were only there to help the pilots out if their machines broke down or fell over. There were rumors that X had played small parts in the war, a few men even claimed to have seen him. One battle field was in the snowy areas near the northern ice-cap. There were stories of men seeing a single man walking out into the wilderness with only a thin jacket. Others of an unidentified man interrupting a raid and destroying computer systems without being caught. When the first remote controlled Mechs were developed the armed forces would have control hubs hidden in bunkers. The information in these places was valuable and kept secret. One of the hubs was raided by enemy forces. It became known as the Finchina Hub Incident, which was considered one of the most strangest incidents in war history. Men destroyed the blockades around it and stormed the bunker. When they got inside they killed the operators and officials. They had discovered that one man had been missing but not presumed dead. They hadn't realized that he wasn't a member of their army until he released tear gas into the rooms of the bunker. The invading forces used gas masks and searched for him. One by one he managed to knock them all out and set off an EMP. It left the facility useless. No one had gotten a look at his face before hand, and no records were shown of him being there before they stormed the bunker. Allen Sinclair knew it had to have been him...it was X. There was only one possible recorded image of X. It was of a suspicious man walking down the street facing away from a public camera. The security camera showed the man turning into an alley and out of sight. The phenomenon began when the owners of a store nearby realize that from their angle, the camera showed no one walking down the street or turning into the alley at all. There were other cameras near the alley, and only the one camera showed anyone turning into the alley. These things bugged Allen, he couldn't find a feasible reason to explain how they happened. After he became the leader of Sinclair Systems he spent his time investigating ways to "alter" himself. While keeping his desires secret, Allen kept his cold glaring outlook on the world, knowing how his company was a monumental influence on the rest of the world. His company was a monopoly on robotics and cybernetics. The public saw other competing companies and didn't complain, but they didn't know that Allen had bought out all the leaders' positions and simply let the competitors stay out of pity. The whole affair had been kept secret. The previous leaders of the companies were all in vacation homes, having been satisfied by Allen's "persuasion" and the promise of never being found out. There were few groups who wanted control and tried to find dirt on Allen Sinclair and his company/empire. They weren't able to find anything on him and little did they know that it wasn't that he hid it well, but that there wasn't anything to find in the first place. No one knew the functions of Allen's mind, he knew the risks of cutting corners and simply enjoyed having an un-tarnishable appearance too much to take the easy way out. He worked hard to achieve what he had earned, but he was eager to use his formal invulnerability to gain as much control as he could. When he met with other businessmen to discuss transactions, he never smiled or frowned and he knew that it would make his opponents nervous.

When Allen left his company, it shocked the world of business. Stocks dropped and prices fluctuated for months afterwards. When police investigated where he went they found his car wrecked and presumed he was dead after seeing the trail of his blood leaving the wreckage. He had faked his death unnaturally well as he did all things. He planned on finding out new ways to enhance himself. He had tried robotic assistance, that only ended in dissapointment. He knew about the myths of rakers, the scrap-heads that were supposedly nuts enough to cut off their own limbs in order to replace them with cybernetic upgrades. It was a crazy thing to do, but Allen Sinclair was very insane behind his faked reason in buisness. He wanted power, and knew you needed to take dangerous risks to get it. He went to the place devoid of "normal" people. He went to Rockland Gulch...
